The Comfortable & Direct Route
Our recommendation: Take a Direct International Bus from San José or Liberia to Granada.
You’ll need to take a taxi from the airport to the bus stop/station.
Departure: San José (various locations, check schedules).
Time: ~7–9 hours.
Cost: ~$30–$40.
Most buses go directly to Granada, but some do not. Make sure you chose one that does go through Granada. (If you do take one that goes directly to Managua by mistake, get off in Nandaime and take a taxi to Granada (approximately US $15). Alternately, you can take public transportation and/or taxis
1.Take a Local Bus or Taxi to Peñas Blancas (Border)
• Bus: From the Liberia bus station, take a bus to Peñas Blancas (border crossing).
• Time: ~1.5 hours
• Cost: ~$5–$10
• Buses: Operated by La Pampa or Transportes Deldu
2. Cross the Border at Peñas Blancas
• Clear immigration & customs.
• Expect 1–2 hours for the process, depending on the line.
3. Take a Bus or Taxi from Peñas Blancas to Rivas
• Bus: Local bus (~$1, 45 minutes).
• Taxi: ~$20–$30 (faster, 30 minutes).
4. Take a Bus or Taxi from Rivas to Granada
• Direct Bus: ~$2, takes ~2 hours.
• Taxi: ~$50 (faster, ~1.5 hours).
We can also arrange a taxi to pick you up at the border.
